An All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final for the ages, which ought to have gone to a replay – twice.
Clare prevailed in a classic, but apart from Banner folk, everyone else wanted another outing the weekend after next. Cork probably deserved another shot and certainly the final play of extra time should have seen a free awarded to them for a shirt tug – a certain leveler and a replay to extend Patrick Horgan’s chance of winning the elusive medal. Of all the games going, provision should surely be made in the calendar to ensure that All-Ireland Finals can go to a replay. Perhaps that will change now that the highly influential Cork folk have been on the receiving end of the ruling. The final was spectacular and superb – a magnificent climax to the championship.
FBD SHC kicks off next weekend
There will be a host of hurling action in Tipperary next weekend with the commencement of the county senior hurling championship. At last the Dan Breen Cup kicks in with some mouth watering clashes in store – Clonoulty Rossmore, fresh from honouring former great, the late Tony Brennan during the week, will take on champions Kiladangan is a standout fixture; while Toomevara and Borrisileigh is also pretty attractive.
Throw in, Templederry vs Brackens; Drom-Inch vs Kilruane MacDonagh; Moycarkey Borris vs Roscrea; Nenagh Éire Óg vs Holycross Ballycahill; last years county finalists Sarsfields vs Mullinahone; and the opener on Friday evening when recently crowned mid champions Loughmore Castleiney take on Lorrha.
There will be much to look forward to in the next few weeks across all the grades – make sure to get your weekend ticket if you don’t have the annual pass. Or check out the games on Clubber.
Big Ball Coaches Call
Tipperary is now looking for two football Managers following the departure of Peter Creedon as boss of the ladies football senior team.
Creedon has followed in the footsteps of senior football Manager Paul Kelly in stepping away from the scene and the hunt will be on for Tipperary LGFA to find a successor, similar to the Tipperary Football Board. These tasks are never easy and the local pool is limited enough, so we wish them well in their endeavours.
Tipp ladies to lock horns with the Tribe
Tipperary and Galway will do battle in the All-Ireland Camogie semi-final next weekend in Nowlan Park – a venue which, of late, can be regarded as a happy hunting ground, especially when the hosts are not the opponents.
Denis Kelly’s charges have improved and developed incrementally with the management team putting a real stamp on the squad as the campaigns progress.
Munster champions last year; League champions this year; the next step has to be to reach the ultimate day and take it from there. Galway, of course, will have something to say about it all. Best of luck to the ladies.
Does your club need a financial dig-out?
Munster GAA has opened the window for applications for Club Development Grants from Central Council and Munster Council.
These grants are a very important and tangible form of support from the Councils to clubs seeking to develop new facilities and improve existing ones. The overall scheme consists of two schemes rolled into one with the overall budget to be confirmed once applications have been submitted and considered.
The scheme consists of 5 categories of funding at club level. Clubs are advised to read the scheme guidelines carefully and submit their application via the online portal by the closing date of Friday August 9th. The County Safety and Facilities Officer will work in tandem with the Munster Council delegate on the Planning and Physical Development Committee to proof all applications.
This is a very important source of revenue for clubs so take the time to check out the Clubs section of the Munster GAA web site to read the guidelines and access the applications links.
Further details can also be sought from relevant County Officers.
