Ep. 170 – Jake Morris 2023 Interview
In late 2023, Tipperary forward Jake Morris sat down with the Premier View Podcast for a wide-ranging one-on-one interview. The Nenagh Éire Óg attacker offered a rare insight into the realities of being a modern inter-county hurler, from so-called “off-season” routines to the balancing act between club and county.
Morris explained that downtime is minimal at the top level. After Tipp’s championship exit, he took a short break before keeping his fitness up with gym work and even a few soccer games. “You’re trying to stay fresh but also stay on top of your fitness,” he said, admitting that while he enjoyed the break, his real hunger is for hurling deep into the summer.
The club remains central to his career. Nenagh Éire Óg secured another North Championship in 2023, and Morris emphasised how much it means to line out with friends he has hurled with since childhood. “The club is where you start and where you finish,” he explained, stressing that while inter-county demands take over during the summer, nothing compares to winning with your parish. With Nenagh ambitious for a Dan Breen Cup in the years ahead, he noted how fiercely competitive the Tipperary senior championship has become, with up to nine sides capable of winning on any given year.
Looking back, Morris highlighted the Hearty and Fitzgibbon Cups as vital stepping stones in his development, while recalling the nerves of joining the senior Tipp panel straight from underage ranks. Training alongside household names was a “real eye-opener”, but invaluable in shaping his game.
24 at the time, Morris acknowledged that with senior leaders stepping aside, he and his generation must carry more responsibility. Leadership, he feels, comes not from shouting but from consistency and performances on the pitch.
