Ep. 194 – Upperchurch/Drombane, All-Ireland Champions
Upperchurch-Drombane All-Ireland Glory, A Day of Drama, Nerve and Belief
Episode 194 of The Premier View Podcast looks back on one of the most extraordinary days in recent Tipperary club history, as Upperchurch-Drombane were crowned All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling champions after a final that had absolutely everything.
From the opening exchanges, Upperchurch looked like a team in total control. They burst out of the blocks, played with freedom, and for the first 20 minutes it felt like they were cruising. Scores were flowing, confidence was high, and from the stands it looked like they were on course to put real daylight between themselves and Toreen.
Then the game flipped.
Toreen thundered back into contention just before half time with a remarkable run of long-range scores. Everything they struck from distance sailed over, spectacular shooting that dragged them right back into the contest. Upperchurch, who had created enough chances to be further ahead, suddenly found themselves under pressure, waiting desperately for the half time whistle to arrive so they could regroup.
What followed was an All-Ireland final in its purest form.
The second half continued at a frantic pace, Toreen recycling possession and pulling shooters into space, while Upperchurch had to find a way to stem the tide. The turning point arrived with a crucial goal early in the second half, a massive lift that swung momentum back towards the Tipperary champions. It didn’t end there. Extra time arrived, goals were traded, and just when it looked settled, Toreen came storming back again.
The defining moment came late, a monstrous long-range free from Gavin Ryan, struck from distance under immense pressure, a score that dragged the game to another twist and summed up the drama of the afternoon. Toreen would come agonisingly close at the death, a final chance crashing off the post, inches from sending the game to penalties.
Upperchurch held firm.
This victory did not come out of nowhere. As discussed on the podcast, it was a season of highs and lows for Upperchurch-Drombane. Narrow escapes earlier in the championship, lessons learned the hard way, and a turning point when their football commitments ended, allowing full focus on hurling. Training time increased, recovery improved, tactics sharpened, and belief grew week by week.
In Croke Park, that belief was matched by bravery. Big players stood up when it mattered. Luke Shanahan’s scoring, Conor Fahey’s goals and the impact of players coming off the bench all told on the biggest day of their lives.
For Tipperary, it is another powerful statement. After Cashel’s Munster run last year and now Upperchurch going all the way, the Premier Intermediate Championship is proving itself as a genuine pathway to national success. Clubs now know that winning in Tipperary gives you a real chance on the All-Ireland stage.
Upperchurch-Drombane are All-Ireland champions, and they have earned it the hard way. A day of chaos, courage, and class, one that will be talked about for generations in black and amber circles.
