Munster GAA Team Spending, the Arms Race in the Room.
We were intrigued by the Irish Examiner Article which took a look at the overall amount spent per Munster County on Teams in 2022 and We decided to do a little bit of digging of our own to see if the figures are climbing or not.
If you are one of those lads that believes the GAA to be an Amateur Organization, its probably best now to stop reading or at least have a sit down before you go any further.
We took a look at the 6 Munster Counties from 2014 to this Year and it involved a bit of leg work in getting all the figures lined up and correct.
Total Munster GAA Team spending for the 6 Counties 2014-2022 is north of €57.5m and no, We didn’t believe the figures at first either
Biggest Spenders are Cork with over €13m in that period.
Followed by Limerick with close on €11.4m of a spend (2022 figure was close on €2.3m alone)
Tipperary with just over €10m spent
Then Kerry close by on €9.4m
Clare €6.8m
And in last place Waterford, who is around €50k shy of Clare’s Total for the Period we looked at.
Total Spending per year is climbing too with the exception of the Covid year of 2020 when it “only” hit €4.9m that year.
2014 €5.8m
2017 €6.6m
2022 €8.8m
All the counties bar Clare and Waterford have been consistently spending the guts of €1.3m to €1.5m on their teams the past 6/7 years
Limerick have broken the €2m spending barrier in 2022, Galway the same
The question has be asked at what point does it become unsustainable for even the best resourced of Counties?
How close are We to reaching that point ?
