Senior Hurling Dan Breen Round 1 Team of the Week
1.Rhys Shelly Moycarkey Borris
0–04 Scored in the 2023 Senior Hurling Championship, the Moycarkey Netminder is halfway to that tally in 2024 already with 0-02 scored. His Performance between the sticks for Moycarkey in their opening day 10 point win over Roscrea wont have done his ongoing joust with Barry Hogan for the Tipperary Number 1 Jersey any harm. A full length diving save in the 2nd half being a highlight of the day.
2.Joe Caesar Holycross Ballycahill
Caesar was listed at Midfield but had to do a man marking job on Jake Morris, No easy feat on any day of the week. Caeasar stuck to the task and got to grips with Morris in the 2nd half and even popped up with a point himself.
3.Peter Melbourne Moycarkey Borris
In the opening half when Moycarkey were blitzing their opponents Melbourne was imperious. Bringing out ball & setting up attacks intelligently. The concession of 3 goals late will be a worry for Moycarkey as whole, but they had the hard work done at that stage.
4.Colm Boyle Borris-ileigh
Boyle was rock solid for a Borris defence who were the meanest on opening weekend with a total of just 0-18 conceded. The pressure was Condsiderably upped by Toome in the 2nd half but the Borris defence held firm and Boyle was to the fore.
5.Willie Connors Kiladangan
Yes you read that right, Willie Connors did start at wing back for the County Champions in their Lazarus like Draw with Clonoulty, not only did he perform his defensive duties well but he also snuck up for the field for a vital point score also.
6. Paddy Cadell Jk Brackens
JK Brackens can probably lay claim to the performance of the weekend. 6-26 is huge scoring in any man’s language. Cadell anchored the Brackens defence and it’ll be interesting to see can he carry his form forward now.
7. Craig Morgan Kilruane
Kilruane McDonaghs are back and so is Craig Morgan, after a rough 12 months since their county final win which saw Morgan injured and Kilruane in relegation trouble. When Morgan plays well, so do Kilruane.
8. Noel McGrath Loughmore Castleiney
We run out of superlatives, Noel McGrath ran the show v Lorrha as only Noel can,Vision and wrists…. Long may it continue
Chipped in with 0-03 from and 0-01 off a free
9. Conor Stakelum Thurles Sarsfields
Stakelum continues to impress in the Blue and White and push his Tipperary claims.
An opening day 0-08 v Mullinahone, but it’s the 0-07 from play that stakes his inclusion here. An all action display from an all action player. Had a tough inter-county year with Tipp but then again, who didn’t. Ready to rumble at club level now it seems.
10. Kyle Shelly Moycarkey Borris
First name on this week’s team of the Week with a commanding performance for the Mid Men, 2-02 from play, 2-09 in total sees him as the Round 1 SHC Top Scorer. Moycarkey were unplayable in the first 13 minutes and had 3-09 on the board, Shelly had two of those goals.
11.Willie Cleary Kilruane
1-38 in last Year’s Championship, Cleary has already indicated how vital he is to the North men’s cause with a round 1 tally of 0-13 this year already.
12. Cathal Bourke Clonoulty Rossmore
1-04 from Play has Cathal Bourke second in the Clonoulty scoring stats to the 1-09 tally of Stephen Fercombe’s. Bourke’s goal had Clonoulty in the driving seat with 10 minutes to go. A thorn in the Kiladangan backs side all day.
13. Robbie Ryan Holycross
The 2023 Premierview Podcast Listeners Minor A Hurler of the Year has taken to the Dan Breen like the proverbial Duck to Water with 4 beauties of Points from Play. One to watch for the rest of the year.
14. Sean Ryan Templederry Kenyons
The Man on so much of Templederry’s hopes resides, Ryan was Rampant with 2-05 from play scored in the highest scoring game of the round v the Brackens which saw a grand total of 9-46 chalked up.
15.Jamie Ormond Jk Brackens
Another Dan Breen Debutante, Midfield on the Premierview Minor Team of the Year in 2023, Young Ormond is now up in the Forwards for the Brackens and last Year’s Tipperary Minor Captain is showing no signs of stage fright with 1-05 from play scored.
